Cover of Interpreter of Maladies

Interpreter of Maladies is where I'd start with Lahiri

On Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

Short stories get overlooked, so here's my pitch. Each one here takes half an hour and leaves you thinking for a day. In the first, a couple start telling each other secrets in the dark during a power cut. As someone from Dhaka, I felt that premise deeply.

My favourite is the last one, about a man's first years in America and the very old woman he rents a room from. Nothing dramatic happens in it. I still think about it all the time.
