The God of Small Things is a book you read twice

On The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

The first time, I was lost for fifty pages. The time jumps around and the language does odd things, with capital letters in the wrong places and words run together the way a child hears them. I nearly gave up.

Don't. By the end you see that the whole structure is built around one terrible day, and you've known from the start that something awful is coming. Then I went back to page one and it was a completely different book. I can't think of many novels that do this.
