Jane Eyre is angrier than I remembered
On Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
I'd filed this under gothic romance. Then I read the first chapters again, with the red room and the awful school, and this child is furious. She talks back. She insists she matters, at a time when nobody thought a poor plain girl did.
I have complicated feelings about Rochester, and about the woman in the attic, and you should read Wide Sargasso Sea afterwards if you do too. But Jane walking away with nothing, because she won't give up her self-respect, still gets me.
