I finally read Frankenstein and it isn't what you think
On Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
No bolts in the neck, no lightning scene, and the creature isn't a grunting monster. He teaches himself to read by spying on a family through a crack in the wall, and then he makes a better argument than anyone else in the book.
Victor Frankenstein, on the other hand, is a whining coward who runs away from his own experiment and then faints a lot. It's told in letters inside stories inside letters, which is slow going at first. She started it as a teenager, which I find a bit annoying.
