A Golden Age made me call my mother

On A Golden Age by Tahmima Anam

It's set in Dhaka in 1971, and it follows a widow who just wants to keep her two children near her while the war comes closer. I'd heard the stories from my own family my whole life, but mostly as dates and places. This one is about cooking and hiding people in the house and being frightened for your son.

I called my mother after I finished it and asked her questions I'd never thought to ask. If you're Bangladeshi, read it. If you're not, it's a good way to learn what that year was like for ordinary people.
