The Catcher in the Rye depends on when you read it
On The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
I read it at fifteen and thought Holden was the only honest person alive. I read it again at thirty and wanted to get him some help and a sandwich. Both readings are correct, I think.
Not a lot happens. He wanders around New York for a couple of days complaining. But under all the complaining there's a kid who hasn't got over his brother dying, and when that finally gets through to you it changes the whole thing.
